As second generation family farmers, we believe in environmental solutions that make economic sense. Good stewardship of our natural resources is good business. We have made substantial investments in solar and water recycling systems, and will continue to use as few resources as possible to grow excellent quality landscape trees, shrubs, groundcovers and grasses, which work naturally to clean our water and air.
Over 70% of the nursery’s electric energy needs are off-set by on-farm solar generation. Our pumps, office, greenhouses, shop, and garden center are supplied by 1800 solar panels which produce nearly 1,000 megawatts per year. We regularly audit our electric usage and look for opportunities to reduce our demand through best management practices. View our solar field output.
Our water retention and recycling facilities have greatly reduced our fresh water consumptive use and has eliminated farm runoff in all but the wet winter months. We recycle approximately 500,000 gallons of water per day during the growing season. We prioritize surface water use over groundwater to ensure the healthy aquifer beneath our farm is available during periods of drought.
We turn all of our clippings, weeds, pallets, and wood waste into compost. The finished compost is blended into our soil mix, ensuring no green waste is sent to the landfill. We minimize the usage of Peat Moss and prioritize compost, recycled wood shavings and sawdust for the majority of our mixes.
